The best quote about York indeed about any city came from
King George VI who said “ The history of York is the
history of England “ and how right he was, we have evidence
here in York from every period of English history.
But how did we become known as “York” well when
the Romans came, the area had been named by the Celts as “Eborocon”
which we think meant “Place where the Yew tree grows”.
The Romans Latanised this to “Eboracum”. When
the Angles and Saxons arrived they didn’t understand
it and guessed that it meant “place where the wild boar
lives” which in their language was “Eoforwic”.
It was then the Viking’s who translated this to Jorvic
pronounced with a “Y”, which eventually became
York.
